Bottled water goes green?

Coca-Cola has announced that it has developed a new plastic bottle made from up to 30% plant material. Despite 70% of the bottle being derived from oil based plastics, the beverage company has named the new package PlantBottle(TM).

Life-cycle analysis indicate that the CO2 emissions associated with the new product will be 30% less than the traditional PET bottle. WWF are all over it. The bioplastic can be recycled with PET waste stream without contaminating it - great!

It's true that Coke's packaging has moved on, with a drive to close the loop and use more recycled PET, but maybe the name PlantBottle(TM) is pushing it a bit?

Besides, the bottle will be used to contain Dasani - Coke's water brand - so bang go all sustainability creds!
